Yesterday Google officially took the wraps off of Android 5.1, and even began rolling out factory images to select devices. Among the new changes highlighted by Google were native dual SIM support, a Protected Devices feature and a few other minor tweaks.

You can be forgiven for thinking that Android 5.1 is a pretty minor update, and not worthy of a full bump to 5.1. But don’t be fooled, this is a HUGE update. While mileage varies depending on your device, the initial rollout of Android 5.0 was full of a number of bugs, which I can personally atest to when it comes to my Nexus 5. With 5.1, the experience is dramatically improved, with battery fixes, some fixes in regards to memory leaks and much more. As you might expect, there are also several entries that are specific to certain Nexus devices here as well, such as “e432c1f shamu: Add support for HW based full disk encryption” for the Nexus 6.
